31. The late Dr. Peterson in his Report on the search for Sanskrit manuscripts for 1884-6 referred to its having long been believed that there was a good copy of the Paippalāda recension of the Atharvasaṁhitā in Gwalior. He had tried to get access to it but was not successful. I also made enquiries about it and one Vaidika at the place who goes by the appellative of Atharvavedi was pointed out to me as the person likeliest to be in possession of such a manuscript. With great difficulty he was prevailed upon with the help of some enlightened Shastris to let me see his manuscripts. I did find with him an old manuscript of the Atharvasaṁhitā as well as of other Vedic works belonging to the Atharvaveda. But the recension was unfortunately not the Paippalāda, but the usual one.
