So long as the root of the mind remains moist by the water of infatuation, the creeper of desires of even great ascetics remains green (youthful). The discriminating ascetic, therefore, getting detached from even the body that he is acquainted with for so long, and maintaining equanimity in happiness and misery and in life and death, remains incessantly engaged in meditation, etc., while enduring self-imposed inflictions on the body, viz., inhabiting places hostile to different seasons – a rock atop a mountain, a tree-base, or a river-bank.
