    Gātha 6

     

    The ‘guru’ or the ‘spiritual teacher’ of the discerning disciple is the one who possesses the following and other qualities of the chief preceptor (ācārya): complete knowledge of the Scripture; pure conduct or purity in the activities of the mind, the speech and the body; expertise in preaching others; keen interest in promulgation of the lofty path (to liberation); reverenced by the learned and with reverence for the unusually learned; modesty; knowledge of the worldly ways; tenderness; and free from worldly desires.
