    14. Adhering to you, the hermit, Nami and Vinami nevertheless became kings of the Khecara. Worship of the feet of the preceptors is never fruitless.[1]

[1] Comm.: Nami- Vinami Kaccha-Mahākaccha-sutau Khecarādhipau jātau. Nami and Vinami are the two men about whom Saudharmendra, amazed by the splendors of Śatruṃjaya, inquires in Weber's Śatr. I, 278. They are depicted standing before Ṛishabha with drawn swords. The relevant incident from Ṛishabha's life is narrated in Śatr.-ullekha p. 70 as follows: Atha purā Śrī-yugādīśe (di Ṛishabha) rājyaṃ curvy Kaccha-Mahākaccha-sutau Nami- Vinamī Bhagavatā putrasnehena pālitau. Bhagavad-ādeśenaiva kutracid gatau abhūtāṃ. Tau Bhagavad-dīkshānantaraṃ samāyātau, Bhagavantam akiṃcanaṃ dṛishṭvāpi, tat- svarūpam ajānantau, tāta tateti kṛitvā, svaṃ rājya bhāgaṃ yācamānau, Bharatādīn avagaṇayya, khaḍga-pāṇī Bhagavatsevā-parau tasthatuḥ. Anyadā Bhagavad-vandanāyāto Dharaṇendras (the prince of the underworld) tayor bhakti dāḍhyaṃ (?) dṛishṭvā hṛishṭo. Bhagavan-mukhe ‘vatīrya shoḍaśa-sahasrāṇi vidyā dattvā, Vaitādhya-parvatopari tabhyāṃ dakshiṇa-śreṇy-uttara-śreṇyoḥ rājyaṃ dadau.

This is precisely the rule over the Khecara's; in Merutuṅgācārya's Mahāpurushacaritram (ms. or. fol. 717), which also contains the life story of Ṛishabha in chapter 1, it says at this point (p. 8 a): Anyadā Dharandraḥ prabhoḥ pranāmāya tatrāgatas taylor bhakti(ṃ) parīkshya.... Vaitāḍhye Khecareśvarau cakre. Nami and Vinami later clash with the world ruler Bharata in dispute. The Khecara's come to their help.

    (Satr.-uddhāra 2,232).

A battle takes place in the clouds, in which Bharata is victorious. Reconciliation is finally achieved as follows:

ity uktvā vinayadharo vinamya (named from it) Vinamir nṛipaḥ |

namnamnam Subhadram strī-ratnaṃ sva-sutāṃ Cakriṇe (Bharata) dadau ||
