    APPENDIX VI [2 of 28]

Knowledge of the 5 āstikayas the 7 tattvas and the nine padārthas.

Knowledge of the 6 inner enemies or positive and negative attachment, as well as the 4 kaṣāyas (anger, pride, intrigue, greed of clinging to one's own body)

Set out on a journey to defeat these six inner enemies. The example from the 8th aṅga is to be quoted:

… It is believed that Bhagavan (a guru who can guide someone about the cycle of birth and death) Rishabhdev once said in his speech: “During this regressive cycle of time, Mother Marudevi became the first siddha. I am the first Tīrthaṅkara and also Bharat is in his last incarnation. He is a man with very little karma and will be liberated during this birth.”

A person had doubts about this statement: the emperor of such a large empire is a person with little karma and I, a destitute, am a person with a lot of karma? How biased is Bhagavan?

When Chakravarti Bharat heard about this, he called the man and put in his hand a bowl filled to the brim with oil and said: “Go around the city of Ayodhya and come back. Be careful as you will be decapitated if a single drop of oil is spilled.”

The poor man began his walk with the bowl of oil in his hand. Behind him walked the king's guards. The city was full of interesting activities such as singing and dancing, various other entertainments, decorated shops, etc. But as the man walked through all this hustle and bustle, all he saw was the bowl filled with oil in his hands. He walked through the city, all his attention on the bowl.

When he came back, Chakravarti (ruler of the world, emperor) asked Bharat, "Brother, what have you seen in the city?"

“Lord, how could I see anything? My eyes stared at that bowl the whole time. If I had looked anywhere else, the oil would have spilled. THE FEAR OF DEATH CONFRONTED ME EVERY MOMENT. And that's why I focused all my attention on the bowl while driving around town.”

Bharat Chakravarti said, “Brother, I live with this realm as well. I am moving through this journey of life with all my attention focused on my soul. If I divert my attention from the soul and allow myself to be distracted by worldly pleasures and comforts, I will be caught in this cycle of life and death. That's why I'm careful not to get lost in this great empire. This is why Bhagavan Rishabhdev called me a man with little karma. And now please judge for yourself.”
